The 25th edition of the magazine PLANTEN is a special on exotic species. The LIFE Resilias systemic approach is also discussed in this themed issue. Janneke van der Loop wrote the article on the systems-oriented approach to invasive exotic species in waterways.

Janneke van der Loop: “Besides the significant damage caused by invasive alien species in nature reserves, areas beyond these also remain susceptible to infestations. In ditches, canals, and other highly dynamic and intensively managed waterways, invasive alien species can also establish themselves and become dominant. The system-oriented approach addresses this by utilising natural processes.”

Janneke was previously involved with LIFE Resilias through project partner Stichting Bargerveen. Currently, she continues the system-oriented approach in her work for the Aa en Maas Water Board, Radboud University Nijmegen, and the Netherlands Centre of Expertise Exotics: “Combating or eliminating invasive alien species in watercourses using traditional methods is very difficult. These methods are often time-consuming and costly, and in many cases require the water system to be drained before interventions are possible. This is usually not feasible. Furthermore, measures during management or re-infestation must be applied repeatedly, which limits long-term effectiveness.”

This special issue of PLANTEN magazine focuses on Floron attention to the impact that exotics have on Dutch flora: “Our biodiversity is being affected by invasive exotics; the consequences are becoming increasingly visible. The special issue covers all sorts of aspects of (invasive) exotics on Dutch flora, including the discussions and even opposing opinions you can have about accepting or combating the many plant species entering our country.”
